Malang Tempoe doeloe 1930 : Colonialism Era

Throwing back to Malang in 1930,
still rich with its colonialism building,
the age when our land still in dutchmen hands.
The age where Karina & Vlahos live (read our novel 'De Komst' here first!)
happily in their lovely house in Idjen Boulevard area.

I got the pictures from 'Tropenmuseum' museum in netherland,
They got so many interesting collection, anyway!

And..nah, this is Idjen Boulevard.
The place where dutchmen and their family live...
(Including Vlahos & Karina too! And Heinrich & Pratiwi..)

Idjen Boulevard

And this is.. shops from the view of 'Pasar Besar'
you can see 'Tio' shop in the right side, the shop still stand until right now :3
(you can find it beside Altara moslem shop)
they sell so many good vintage stuff just like jewelry, wayang, batik equipment, etc

Pasar Besar Malang
And this is 'Neutrale Lagere School' located in Jl.Dr.Soetomo 35 (now)
This school originally dedicated for Dutch kids, that's why it named 'Neutrale School Vereeniging' or 'Europase Lagere School'.
The school right now has been bought by the catholic missionary after burnt down by inlander between 1940-1950 and now stand as 'Kolese Santo Yusuf'

Neutrale Lagere School (Kolese Santo Yusuf *right now*)

This is the church beside 'Jami' mosque'
you can still find it near alun-alun kota right now :3

Church
 And.. This is Kajoetangan Straat
It really hard to recognize it at first because this street totally looks so different!
Everything has changed.. and i have no idea which shop still stands right now...
well, umm maybe a shop in the left side of the photos... but still i doubt it :-/

Kayutangan street, Malang
Ah, a Dawet seller in pasar besar! :D
The dutchmen must be really love the taste, huh?
(I think about it, actually. To put a scene where Vlahos and Karina walk around and bought so many local foods like Dawet *but i have no idea where to put this scene*)

This! Stasiun Kota Lama!

Stasiun Kota Lama
And... church beside Mcdonald (right now)
i have no idea what's the name of the church until right now,
but you can still found it in the same place this day. Located near Alun-alun kota Malang :)
Looks so.. gloomy

This is military hospital,
which i have no idea where's this place right now.
Is it Lavallette? Or Saiful Anwar?
anyoneeee??!

Anyway, i could use this one for my novel :-)

military hospital
Palace Hotel, still stand in the same place, located near Jami' mosque :D

Anyway, i really wanted to go back to 1930,
seeing so many dutchmen in the street, people with kebaya,..
I know, basically as a 'real' Indonesian, we musn't think of this,
because we're the one who got really misery in this era.

But honestly,
i wanna be like Vlahos & Karina. For real :')
Ah, the main idea of love between two people from a different background,
Dutchmen & Inlander
This.. is.. just... *faint*

    Hi Monica,

What an interesting blog you have! I have lived in Malang for a couple years and have a website about this lovely city. So I recognize the building I see on this blog.

Sometimes I miss also the old time even though I wasn't born yet :)
Have you been back to Malang recently?

For sure I'll back to your blog again.

Pls visit my website and we can talk about Malang later. So much to tell....

    Hello,

In 1980's and before, the military hospital was known as Rumah Sakit Tentara "Soepraoen" and meant for the army members and their family. It is now open for public. And now don't hope you will find the same buildings like one at the above picture. Totally different.

Hello, I think that you've get the wrong places. That photo is the view of front of Rumah Sakit Tjelaket. Now it is RSSA (Rumah Sakir Saiful Anwar). That view of front that hospital is not the same with the view of front RSSA this right now.
    Regards,
